#theevolutionwillnotbetelevised

Recently, my editor/auntie (term of endearment) at Garden Spices magazine told me that helping other people write and express themselves might be my ministry. Ministry and Marlon have never been mentioned in the same sentence. Ever.

Funny how things happen, right? I have mentors/gurus/supporters who have helped, coaxed, and nudged me along in this writing journey of mine. When I've reached out, they have given lessons and advice which I've added to my toolbox. I am grateful. I asked myself how could I possibly help others?

I didn't solicit or put out a shingle saying "Willing to help fledgling writers" but somehow I crossed the minds of some people in need of assistance and reassurance.

A young lady sent me her first chapter in an urban tale she's working on. I edited, added, and told her to keep writing. I told her of story structure, "showing, not telling," and I hope she keeps grinding away.

Others have sent me stories or ideas which I have critiqued, edited, and advised them of the next steps they need to take in the process. Bringing a story or idea to fruition is not an easy task, no matter what the populace thinks. Everybody needs a helping hand or a few helping hands, and I am no exception.

The other night, I received a message asking for advice on how to start a blog. I was skeptical at first, but I asked the writer about the content, subject, and aim of their blog. They sent me a piece and I was floored. Just like that, I was involved in a new project. I volunteered as an editor, contributor, and advisor. And the ball started rolling...

On Sunday morning, a new Facebook page, 'Laurice; the Rediscovery," is rolling out. It chronicles a woman's journey to rediscovering herself. It is full of love, life, laughter, and that overwhelming sense of "I know this feeling." Trust me, it is worth following and supporting.

In other 'mentoring' type stuff, three of the other 'Voices' from 'Voices from the Bleachers' are pursuing new adventures in writing, and I'm encouraging and pushing. I can't help it.

There are a few others who I am encouraging and helping, just as numerous others have pushed me (Dennis, Kari, Jeremy, etc.), and the best way to show gratitude for the lessons learned is to pass them along and to share with others. Indeed.

Maybe I have found another calling... We'll see.
